https://ancolt-pekanbahasa.unkafa.ac.id/index.php/proceeding/article/view/122

Political language serves as a powerful instrument to shape perceptions, evoke emotions, and guide decision-making, particularly in critical settings such as presidential debates. This study explores the role of metaphors in the presidential candidate debates in the Republic of Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative research with a content analysis approach, the research draws on Lakoff and Johnson's (1980) theory of Cognitive Metaphor to analyse the use of metaphorical expressions by the candidates in the debates organized by the General Election Commission (KPU). The study also investigates the impact of these metaphors on audience opinions during the election process. Two official debate sessions conducted by the KPU served as the primary focus of this research. The findings reveal the presence of various types of metaphors, including nine dead metaphors, six active metaphors, five implicit metaphors, and six submerged metaphors. Among the candidates, Anies Baswedan (candidate number one) demonstrated a slight advantage in employing metaphors and persuasive strategies, using 11 metaphorical expressions. This was followed by Prabowo Subianto (candidate number two) with eight expressions and Ganjar Pranowo (candidate number three) with seven expressions. The study highlights the significant role metaphors play in shaping public opinion and influencing voters' decisions. By creating connections between objects and subjects, metaphors provide audiences with new perspectives and stir emotional responses. In conclusion, the strategic use of metaphors in political debates can profoundly impact voter emotions and, ultimately, their choice of the best presidential candidates.
Hendri Pitrio PutraMunira HasyimSairil

https://ancolt-pekanbahasa.unkafa.ac.id/index.php/proceeding/article/view/74

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in education poses challenges in bridging the gap between automated tools and the nuanced understanding required for effective language learning. This study investigates the optimization of AI-based translation to enhance information literacy in language education. Employing a systematic literature review method, the research examines three core questions: the role of AI translation in supporting language learners' comprehension and literacy, challenges, and opportunities in integrating AI translation into curricula, and its effectiveness compared to traditional translation methods. Data were collected from 302 articles, with 38 meeting the inclusion criteria. The analysis revealed that AI translation accelerates access to textual meaning, aiding learners' critical literacy skills. However, limitations in capturing cultural nuances and idiomatic expressions necessitate collaborative human-AI evaluation.
Blended learning became essential during the COVID-19 pandemic and was implemented in higher education, including at STKIP YPUP Makassar. This study examines students’ perceptions of blended learning in English language learning during and post-pandemic. Using a descriptive quantitative approach with a survey design, data were collected through a questionnaire with 20 close-ended questions. The study involved 20 eighth-semester students from the English Education Department. Findings indicate that most students had a positive perception of blended learning. However, post-pandemic, positive perceptions declined to 57% compared to 71% during the pandemic, suggesting growing concerns about its effectiveness.
Andi Haeriati AlimuddinRita Roswita DuyoWanda

https://ancolt-pekanbahasa.unkafa.ac.id/index.php/proceeding/article/view/99

Understanding EFL students’ preferred activities while learning English is essential since it helps teachers conduct engaging classroom practices. However, teachers sometimes only rely on their choices. Consequently, a mismatch between students’ and teachers’ preferred activities often happens. Therefore, this study aims to discover students’ learning activity preferences and the actual activities they experience, determining their alignment or misalignment and how it affects students in language learning. This study was conducted using a convergent parallel mixed-method design. A questionnaire was administered to 40 first-year students in a lower-secondary Islamic boarding school. Descriptive statistics is used to analyze quantitative data, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The results indicated a misalignment between students’ preferred activities and the actual activities they experience while learning English which caused students’ dissatisfaction and disengagement. These findings contribute to EFL teachers in creating innovative lesson plan by considering students’ preferred activities.
Siti Anisah

https://ancolt-pekanbahasa.unkafa.ac.id/index.php/proceeding/article/view/89

This study reports the implementation of debate as a potential pedagogical tool in developing students’ writing ability on argumentative texts among EFL primary school students. As many as 18 sixth-grade students (N=18) of one private school in West Java took part in this study. The study employed a pre-test and post-test design to assess improvements in writing fluency, lexical richness, coherence and cohesion. The results showed significant across all areas. Students' average word count increased by 109%, lexical complexity (type-token ratio) rose from 0.29 to 0.36. Furthermore, the use of cohesive devices increased by 76%. These findings hint great opportunity for English teachers to implement debate activities to foster deep learning and significantly enhance argumentative writing skills in young L2 learners.
Istihari Istihari

Mandrasi Amira Sa'idahMuhammad TharmidziAfryandi Pamungkas

Ahmad Sirfi Fatoni
